History of martin park

Martin Park, formerly known as Greenfield Township has seen a lot of change over the years.  In March 1836, 160 acres of it's approximate 960 acres, was purchased by Judge Benjamin F.H. Witherell.  He renamed this area "The Village of Cassandra" after his third wife.  In 1926 Greenfield Township was dissolved into Highland Park and Detroit. History of the area is very limited, these are our humble beginnings as best we have been able to ascertain.

Martin Park is home to two great educational institutes, The University of Detroit and Hally.  Father John McNichols moved the University of Detroit from Jefferson Ave to McNichols and Livernois in March 1921.  After his death Palmer Blvd was renamed McNichols Ave.  Hally was built in 1928 and named after Judge P.J.M. Hally.

Other street name changes include Lawton St, formerly Lauder Blvd and Grove St, formerly named Auburn Ave.

In the 1920's, the building located at Baylis and McNichols was a well-known speakeasy. It's popularity was in it's design.  Visitors of the speakeasy were able to enter by driving right into the speakeasy and park on the upper floors.
